Hi Auralites!

I'm so happy you found the key and entered the portal!

Behind the Keyhole is where I share the things that don’t always make it beyond these walls, think the stories behind the stories, glimpses of worlds still taking shape, characters you haven’t met yet, and secrets I’m not quite ready to tell everyone else.

Think of this as your invitation behind the curtain.

Here, you may discover sneak peeks, deleted or bonus scenes, character notes, worldbuilding, artwork and inspiration, early looks at upcoming projects, and the occasional surprise I’ve tucked away just for Auralites.

Some doors will open before others. Some secrets will appear without warning. And you never know what might be waiting the next time you return.

After all, you have the key now. ✨

Blackthorne House Character Art

While putting together The Night Devours Us All anthology, some of the other authors had commissioned artwork for their stories. This was new to me, and what a fun experience it turned out to be.

I worked with artist Maka | @lemonciel.art on Instagram who was a dream to work with! I thought it would be fun to share the process with you.

Step 1: Art Idea

First things first, I sent Maka a description of my character Evelyn Vale with my idea for the artwork. Artists typically haven't read your story so it's important to provide details and context.

This is what I sent:

Physical description: Shoulder length black hair with a natural curl, short in stature, thin, plain features - slender nose, round face, rosy lips and cheeks, big brown eyes, thick lashes, pointed chin.

Age:  31

Clothing: simple pale blue dress with the collar ironed flat against a V-neckline that ended in buttons at the center, fitted waist, A-line style skirt.

Prop: Black and silver typewriter on an old mahogany desk

Setting: Beautiful mahogany shelves lined the walls, full of books begging to be selected. A rolling ladder rested in the corner but could be moved around the room. A fireplace nestled into one wall with a bronze horse sculpted in mid-gallop on the mantle, and a couch and two chairs sat in front of it with a large desk behind the couch with papers and books stacked neatly. On the opposite wall were a smaller table and chair facing a tall window. A typewriter sat on the table with papers strewn about, and one in the platen. This is a room in an old gothic manor. This probably takes place in the 1930s.

Just for background context of the house: Blackthorne House watched me. Its three stories towered as if poised to swallow me whole. The gray sky reflected the moodiness of the sprawling Victorian house, with its cathedral influence of dark symmetry and lancet windows staring like hollow eyes. Four evenly spaced stone buttresses stood guard on the facade, grounding the manor, while decorative pinnacles crowned the roofline like jagged teeth behind steep gables.

Art concept: Evelyn sitting or by the desk with the typewriter. Maybe a slight suspicious look or one that knows something you don’t. There is also a black cat in the story who would be on the floor near but not next to Evelyn (if you wanted to include).

Step 2: Sketches

Maka created two scene sketches for me to choose from. It was so exciting to see the beginnings of my character coming to life!

Sketch #1

Sketch #2

I went with sketch #2 and we worked through finalizing some details. Maka sent some photos of similar hairstyles for me to choose from, and she really nailed the vision!

Sketch #3 - In Progress

A couple of weeks later I received the final sketch which I loved! I gave the green light to continue with this sketch.

Step 3: Drafts

Maka sent a rough draft of the sketch in color.

I never envisioned red curtains in the house so I asked if we could change the curtain color to more of a midnight blue.

Maka made the change, and I was happy with it. I approved and gave the go ahead to continue each step of the way.

Step 4: Final

Talk about a pleasant surprise! I checked my inbox one day and there was the final version of my Evelyn Vale art!

I am obsessed! I think it turned out so good, and Maka did a fantastic job! The whole experience was amazing,, and Maka was lovely to work with. She really got my vision and executed it so well. I enjoyed giving a lot of freedom to see what the artist came up with and created.

If you order The Night Devours Us All and would like an art print, just contact me with your info and I'll be happy to send it to you!

Stay tuned...Maka will be working her magic on Maris and Thalen from Accord of Salt & Soul!
